  • LAG is not a BUG

Although data between devices and servers travel in a blink of an eye it still takes some time. Each action in the game is verified by servers. Usually there are four players in the match. This means there are lots of data travelling back and worth between the servers and all four players' devices. Sometimes there are six players or even more in a match! Even if you have a good internet connection the other players might not.

In many other games you don't realize the lag you might have because it doesn't effect the game so much. Bomber Friends is a bit different. In Bomber Friends it is important to have the players in sync. You will notice the lag because it can't be hidden in a same way it could be hidden if the game was not so hectic.

We can't fix players' internet connections but we can fix sync problems that lag causes. The servers check everything. Actions done while lagging are reverted. This means players, bombs or even walls are pulled back in time. To the players this can look like someone is teleporting on the map or that bombs are replaced by other bombs, or bombs are disappearing. Sometimes it looks like a player dies "without a reason". This happens when the servers kill someone who walked away from a blast that should have killed them. Have you wondered why you sometimes get the shield when you run to it with an other player at the same time? This is when the lag is so minimal that you basically made it to the shield at the same time.

If you have so much lag you see the wi-fi icon on top of the bombs or even on top of the screen you are having connection problems. Make sure there are no other apps using the internet connection on the background. If you are playing on wi-fi go sit closer to the router.

"I have a fast internet! Why do I have lag?"

Fast internet connection doesn't mean you can't have lag.
High speed and good internet connection are terms that refer to the bandwidth (which is download and upload speed). This means that it takes less time to finish downloading a file with fast internet connection.

Q: What can I do to get better ping and less lag?
A: There are some things that can help!

    1. Always play on the region that has lowest ping
    2. When playing on wi-fi go sit closer to the router, sometimes restarting the router can help too. You might even need a better router.
    3. Check if other family members are using up the bandwidth. The more devices there are connected to the same router the higher your ping.
    4. Close all other apps on the device and stop them using background data
    5. Make sure your Google Play services and apps are up to date
    6. Uninstall all unnecessary apps to make sure there is sufficient internal storage space and also clear cache files
    7. Check you have enough free RAM. It doesn't matter how much RAM you have on your device if none of it is free.
    8. Take a break! If you play for a long time your device might heat up. The hotter your phone gets the slower it will run. Processors might be hot even if the phone doesn't feel too warm in your hand.

Lag is not a bug, but there are bugs associated with lag.

      For instance:
      1. Ghost bombs that don't explode can appear after some packet loss that you can't walk through but other players can.
      2. You can get stuck unable to move -- presumably because your local game state does not match the state on the server.
      3. You can drop two quick fuse bombs with 1 second between them, but because of lag they end up exploding at almost the same time.
      4. You can run at the same speed at someone else, at the same location and direction as them, but they have a lower ping, so you get stuck by their bombs, but not vice-versa.

The lag isn't the bug here but lag makes all these worse and these bugs could be fixed.

Thank you for the comments. I'm interested in knowing more about these issues, but we better not talk in this lag thread. I'm just going to comment shortly.

        1. Ghost bombs that don't explode? Like, never? They stay there for the rest of the match? And they can't be blown up by other bombs? I have not heard about something like this. Please start a new thread under bug reports. I need more information and a video where I can see this. We can also check what happens on the servers if you send a match report.

        2. Unable to move? This is interesting but has nothing to do with lag. If you are lagging you keep on playing normally unless the ping gets so high you are kicked out of the match. The sync issues between players' local match state and the servers are fixed by reverting players positions, killing players who walked away from a blast unharmed and fixing the bomb timer. If you see a wi-fi icon on top of a bomb it means you were lagging when you placed it and it will probably blow up sooner you would think.

        3. Quick fuse bomb issue. This is not really a bug. The explosion time is not counted from your local game state but from the game state on the server (bomb timer starts when the bomb is placed on the server). Lagging would give an unfair advantage if other players wouldn't know when the bombs are going to blow up and therefore it can't be timed from the local game state.

        4. Running speed. This one is not a bug either. If you are slower or lagging you will get stuck in their bombs. The servers always check which one was in the spot first - a player or a bomb. If you have high ping you answer the servers' calls slower. Even when you think you are running the same speed as someone else, it might be that in their perspective you are half a square or more behind. Because two players who seem to be running the same speed can both see themselves ahead of the other player there is one case where it doesn't matter if you are lagging a little bit. When running for a shield power up both players will get the shield if they are there within a certain time. Without this exception lagging players would be confused on why the player who was running behind them got the shield and they didn't.
